Review by Solandia

"In ancient Goddess centered culture, women’s connection to the moon was honoured in ceremony and in daily practice of moon observation and worship. While modern culture has subverted the Goddess, that ancient connection thrives in our bodies and spirits. We still bleed, grow and feel by the light of the moon."

The Attuned: A Moon Cycle Deck is a unique set of 28 cards created by a Canadian artist, Andrea Palframann. The incredibly vibrant and luminous art features Goddess-inspired images from around the world, from India, Europe and Africa and are a self-described “work of heart”, the result of a seven year personal and artistic journey.

The images of the "moon cycle and divination deck" are not necessarily of distinct goddesses; rather they are illustrations of the chosen archetype, be it the Sun, the Moon, Synergy or Windsong. They are titled:

Birth
Harvest
Lovers
Aspiration
Sensuality
Contemplation
Desert Seed
Sun
Satisfaction
Nurture
Playfulness
Expression
Confidence
Wisdom
Moon
Dream
Serenity
Synergy
Windsong
Humility
Muse
Patience
Angel
Star
Gemini
Luna
Abandon
Death

Each of the 4 x 6 inch cards was originally created as a large-size oil pastel drawing. The medium gives the images a brightness and colour contrast not often seen. My favourite card was Satisfaction, with its stunning blend of electric blues and greens. In the booklet, this card has the meaning of:

Self-knowing, self-loving, self-aware: To be in balance with one’s self is a sensual experience; to attune your sense to the rhythms and cycles of the moon is to be divinely connected. Let the grin of the crescent moon shine all over your waves.

The companion leaflet folds out to show a message from the artist on her inspiration for the cards, a paragraph of insight for each card, and suggestions on how to use the Attuned deck. Andrea suggests using the deck when in need of guidance or affirmation, or to draw one card on the first day of your menstrual cycle, another card the day thereafter, and so on until there is one card left. This is to “cycle through the entire deck, in step with the changes in the moon and in your own body.”

The backs of the cards are pale in colour and have a triplicate design of a lotus and crescent moon. The faces have a solid-colour borders around the pastel-drawn images of various hues – there is no real pattern to the choice of colour.

The Attuned cards and leaflet are packaged in a handmade wooden box with a slide-off top - like an old-fashioned pencil case – which the back of the box says it is an “aromatic cedar box made on Salt Spring Island”. The whole Attuned set has a lovely energy and feel, from its packaging to its booklet to its cards, and it’s nice to see a deck creator pay attention to extra details like how the cards will smell. (I’ve opened decks before that - for whatever reason during the printing process - ended up with a strong and off-putting smell that made it a less-than-pleasant experience to use the cards at all.)

The Attuned: A Moon Cycle Deck is a feminine and female deck of cards that combines Goddess images, primal colours and written affirmations for a joyful experience. I thought it a shame there were only 28 cards – I would have liked to see more of the gorgeous art!
