Medicine Cards Reviews

Discover power through the ways of animals, using traditional Native American animal associations. The Medicine Cards feature a nice cameo of the particular animal, but are a little on the plain side.

Review by Sally Ann

In the Medicine Cards, Sams and Carson offer teachings from animal medicine. They have brought together what they have learned from the animal kingdom and their teachers through out the years. The cards are illustrated with each animal that is beautifully done with in a Dream Catcher. Each card shows one animal with in the Dream Catcher with its name and number. Assigned to each card is a special quality that reflects that animalís nature.

It is a method of divination to assist your soul to find its path through the medicine of animals. Each aspects of the animal has its own medicine to teach one in your life. Each part of creation has a distinctive place with in the Medicine Wheel all its own. The Authors have taken teachings from the Lakota, Aztec, Cheyenne, Choctaw, Cherokee and other tribes traditions to show us the doorway of understanding ones self with our connection to Mother Earth.

The 1988 edition had just 44 animals but 8 more have now been added in the 1999 edition. Nine blank cards are also included, this is so you can add your own extra animals. The book Medicine Cards: The discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals (255 pages) describes animal medicine in Native American teachings, the gift of each animal and how that gift may be impacting in your life. A contrary or reversed meaning is also given for each card. The artist Werneke does a wonderful job of showing you each animal.

Some animals may be your power animal for a life time while others are here to show you some aspect of your life that you may be needing to learn. Loyalty for the Dog and the Gentleness for the Deer, the Turkey for Giveaway, and the Joy for Hummingbird are a few of the animals you can learn by. I enjoy using these cards and their wisdom. And you will too! A good deck to have for your collection. Great for beginners.

This edition comes in a deck set with 52 cards plus 9 blank card. The back of the cards are solid turquoise with pale yellow thunderbolt. The book has 246 pages, hardcover. Published by St. Martinís Press, and printed in the U.S.A.

Draw on the ancient wisdom and traditions to teach the healing medicine of animals with this powerful divination system it has found its way into the hearts and hands of many. It provides insight into the understanding of our purpose on Mother Earth. It includes a broad range of animals found on the North American continent. Ant, mouse, dragonfly, dolphin whale, bat , eagle, coyote, beaver, buffalo, and mountain lion, are just a few.

Note: Some people have asked if the cards can be used for medical diagnosis, this is not the intention of these cards. A doctor should be seen. Indians use the term medicine to mean in the nature of the animal and in the spirit of the animal. Used creatively you can use this as any other tarot deck.
