The Artist's Concept
My reasons for choosing to design the Seven of Wands were obscure and mysterious. Ok...I have no idea -- it was one of the Minor Arcana left...!
I think the balance of the Seven of Wands is in contrasting competition and uncontrollable circumstances, with the feeling of success that comes of succeeding. If the card captures that, I have succeeded. {Of course, one day I'll probably run across a design that totally changes my interpretation of the card forever...} This card differs from the Rider Waite by having no full human figures, only spiritual hands, although this can be considered a symbol in itself.
The focus of the image is the centre wand. Although blocked and parried by the other six, the centre wand has still put itself forward. This has improved its own standing, shown by its partial eclipsing of the Sun. It has also improved its former competitors, and this is shown by the underlying pattern that their conflict has produced.
Card Meaning
I feel that this card symbolises taking affirmative action, and succeeding, even when out-numbered or swamped by adversity.
In reversal, I think that that this card would represent feeling buried under problems, and not taking action when it was possible.
