Description
A man slowly moves through a world of hot rock and lava. On his back he
carries a huge 10 of Wands from the Thoth Tarot.
Symbolism
I was studying the Thoth deck when I made this card, and wanted to
somehow integrate it with the Rider-Waite-Smith symbolism of carrying a
burden that weighs us down. The man is engulfed in an oppressive world
of fire, his path is traversable but the going is slow and dangerous.
Card Meaning
For the Thoth deck the card means "Oppression" - uncontrolled energy
moving without focus. In Rider-Waite-Smith decks, it often refers to
carrying a burden, being oppressed by our thoughts, or taking on too
much.
Artistic Media
The world of Lava was created in Bryce. The model was photographed on a
sunny day. in the park. carrying a large spiderweb styled bundle of
sticks which was eventually photoshopped out. The Thoth 10 of Wands was
created entirely from scratch in Photoshop. Recreating the card was the
most enjoyable and rewarding part of this process... I spent hours
looking at every detail in the original and my understanding and
appreciation of the card was greatly increased.
Artist's Bio
Robert spends too much time on the computer and hopes he does not look
back on his life wondering if that time might have been better spent in
the "real world".
