Description

We see an image of a figure breakdancing in a nightclub. The dancer is performing what is known as a 'headspin', which is literally executed by standing on one's head and spinning around in circles very fast.

Symbolism

The spinning figure is hardly recognizable as a figure at all, instead looking like a flame. This cards element is Fire, and the spinning figure symbolizes this element.

The dancer himself is 19 years old, not a boy but also not yet a man, he symbolizes the Knight and we see our Knight with very concentrated, creative, passionate and focused energy. The Knight or breakdancer is focusing all his energy into one move. This symbolizes the directness of the Knight of Wands and how one can focus their passionate, inspired and creative energy directly into one force, move or pattern of growth.

The dancer grew up in quite tragic circumstances: a council housing estate, his Father was an alcoholic who murdered his Mother and then committed suicide. The dancer was age 15, instead of directing his energy into more destructive behavior he chose to focus it into something positive, creative, driven and inspired. To see him dance and be part of the energy that is created by his dance is something that I consider not only to be a privilege, but also inspirational.

Card Meaning

The Knight of Wands is about pure energy associated with the element of Fire. The energy is one that needs to de directed into creative activities and ones that are positive and that inspire and encourage one to grow. This could be writing, the Tarot, dance, painting or whatever medium you consider to be creative and inspirational.

Artistic Media

This photograph was taken in a nightclub in 1999. I used 35mm transparency film and a very low shutter speed. The photograph has not been tampered with by PhotoShop or the likes. I am an old school photographer, believing in the simplicity of the moment when the shutter closes and opens again and produces one still, if the still is of a person then I believe that the essence of their soul has been captured.
