Description
Naissance du Jour - A 'star is born' as the World Dancer parts the curtains of night and emerges like a blossoming rose to shine her light on a new day.
Symbolism
The world wreath of the Marseille has become heavy blue
curtains, meant to suggest the 'curtains of night', but these
curtains are also theatrical reminding us that 'all the world’s a
stage.' They have opened in the darkened theater, and the ballerina
has come forth onto the stage with a gentle and almost demure, but at the
same time powerful, radiance. The parting of the curtains is also a
hats off to the 'Cosmic Vulva' depicted in Aleister Crowley’s version of
the World Card – The Universe.
Here, the World dancer is not naked,
but wears a tutu made of rose petals. Her legs are in passé – the
turned out and crossed position, slightly reminiscent of the crossed
legs in the Marseille World card, and recalling also, those of the
Hanged Man. She dances with the red scarf, which symbolizes the
snake, her partner, and father of creation.
Card Meaning
Success, coming into ones own, stepping into the
limelight, breaking through to the other side, finally the door has
opened and you have walked through, the fulfillment of one’s dreams,
spiritual enlightenment.
Artistic Media
First I did a free-hand sketch with pencil on paper,
vaguely inspired by an ancient photograph of myself as the Rose Queen,
but in a completely different position. Then I traced with contours
with watercolour pencils, and brushed the colours out with water.
After that I filled in the bigger areas with gouache. When it was
dry, I scanned it into photoshop, and played with layers of hues and
shade and the eraser tool to create the lighting effects.
Artist's Bio
Firemaiden, 43, was kidnapped into the cyber world of
tarot three years ago while residing in Berlin in pursuit of an opera
career. She discovered the Book of Thoth online which led to the
purchase of one innocent little pocket size copy of the Thoth deck
with German keywords, and it has been a hopeless descent into tarot
addiction ever since. Firemaiden loves to do readings for others, and
particularly enjoys doing spoof readings. Originally trained as a
ballet dancer and choreographer, she studied French literature in
college, until finally turning to opera. Firemaiden now lives in
Mendocino, California.
