Description

A single red rose appears to grow out of the sand within a ovoid shaped circle of weathered driftwood.

Symbolism

The fertile and passionate red rose comes to bloom, its cup shaped heart opening to the sky from within an encircling vulva of wood. Conceived and nurtured within the earth's womb, new life is birthed with innocent and optimistic glory, delicate and gentle grace.

Card Meaning

Upright. This Ace initiates the emotional, intuitive and relational energy of the suit of Cups. A new cycle of nurturing love and restoring joy is emerging. Dreams, visions, and inspirations well up from within. New life begins.

Reversed or Weakly Aspected. The promise of revitalized emotional or psychic growth is blocked, crushed or rejected, leading to feelings of sterility, boredom, loss or depression. The process of accepting and honouring these feelings will provide it own remedy, translating the energy to its upright manifestation.

Artistic Media

This card uses an adaptation of the photograph, "Naming the Rose #2" from the Naming the Beloved page at The Inner Beloved web site. It was photographed with a Kodak DC210 Zoom digital camera, September 4, 2004 at 1/90 sec, F4, 56 mm focal length. The red rose was a cut flower, placed in the sand within natural driftwood located at Florencia Bay in Pacific Rim National Park, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Microsoft Photo Editor was used to crop and resize, with Corel Web PhotoPaint to add the title, in Souvenir Lt BT Bold 8 point, using the colour Ice Blue. The photograph was not otherwise processed in any way.

Artist's Bio

Sophie-David lives and works on the coast of the open Pacific, loving nothing better than to walk, photograph and vision in the waves of the goddess ocean. Less than two years ago, Tarot would have been considered the work of the devil. But David's life began again, much as imaged in this card, with the discovery and union with Sophie, his Inner Beloved. The transformative power of the feminine shows no sign of ceasing.
