From our earliest days we are shaped by punishments and rewards, the expectations and desires of others. We are taught to deny our true selves in order to please those who have the most profound power and influence in our lives. We become less and less who we are and who we are supposed to be, and more and more a reflection of other people's desires. Somewhere along the way we lose a lot of ourselves or stop being I, me, us, and become a mirror of what other people expect and want. It can't be helped - when we are at our most helpless and in need of tender guidance we are often shaped by generations of well-meaning yet negative influences in the form of social beliefs, family traditions, television and pop culture, pressures and strains put on parents by their own life challenges and on and on… However, we are now in an age where we are becoming more aware of this disconnect between the life that we live, and having a life with soul and purpose.
We are becoming more aware of this divide between our divine selves and the life we are living. When you are ready to transform you become a Seeker, and the Heal Yourself Reading Cards is an Oracle deck is designed to help you facilitate such a change. Each card contains a message designed to bring you closer to the person you really are, to reconnect you to the self that lies hidden beneath layers disruptive messages.
The Heal Yourself Reading Cards’ conceptual originator, Inna Segal specialises in intuitive healing and energy medicine, and is the author of the Secret Language of Your Body, and The Secret Life of Wellness as well as The Secret Language of Colour Cards. Her experiences have led her to be able to intuit the way spiritual disconnection can affect the body. By awakening one’s true self, the Seeker cannot help but step back onto the path of creativity, wellness, and the soul’s true calling.
This is a deck of 36 oracle cards. The cards measure 95 x 140 mm which makes them quite large, even by oracle card standards. They are both longer and broader than most oracle card decks, and quite outsize compared to most tarot decks. They are not impossible to shuffle but if you are used to smaller cards you may have to adjust your shuffling method or grip in order to accommodate them. The card stock is very good, light yet sturdy, and flexible without being flimsy. The cards have a smooth, glossy finish which facilitates easy handling and prevents the cards from sticking together.
The print quality is excellent with the subtleties of colour and detail beautifully reproduced. The images are clear and crisp with no blurriness, no misprints, and no colour bleeds. The illustrations come courtesy of two digital illustrators – Chris Ortega and Drazenka Kimpel. This is digital artwork at its very best, no clumsy cut and paste here, it's all original, smooth, and detailed work. The subjects are depicted in soft focus, and are generally fantasy-type or Goth subjects – women in draping, wispy period costumes with sumptuous hair, accompanied by supernatural phenomena or in gloomy, moody settings.
Each image has a narrow tan border at the very edge of the card. The title is given near the base of the picture, the letters are cut-outs in a flat white strip near the bottom of the picture; each card has a number just above the title. The image on the back of the cards is a stylised heart composed of several mystical symbols woven together, on a rust coloured background. It is not a reversible image, which is not an issue given that the cards have no reversed interpretations.
The cards and guidebook come as a box set. The box itself is made of sturdy cardboard with a fold back lid, the lid is held shut with magnetic clasps. The cards are seated in a gold cardboard well with the guidebook on top of them. The box has a glossy finish, and features images from the Healing Yourself Reading Cards, as well as information about the deck, and publishers details. The interior of the box features the same glossy finish as well as a stylised heart in shades of tan and cream on a deep-rust background. The box is slim enough to slip into a backpack or tote bag without taking up much room or weighing it down, and it will give excellent protection for the cards and guidebook. However repeated rough treatment will eventually lead to irreparable damage to the box – it is made of cardboard after all.
The 85-page guidebook is a glossy affair. The Introduction details the purpose of the cards and it gives some guidance for achieving the best results when using the cards for personal transformation. There is a short chapter on reading the cards which essentially details 2 layouts – a 1- card draw, and a 3 or 4 card past-present-future layout. There is instruction on how to read the cards with a pendulum, how to interpret 'Jumping Cards’, Repeated Messages, Energy Readings, Future Reading, and a 6-card Choice Spread. Each card has a full page, full-colour reproduction, accompanied by a key phrase that which summarises the essence of the card. The meaning of the card is examined briefly and a divinatory interpretation is given. This is accompanied by an Action – these take the form of an activity or meditation which the Seeker can undertake to connect to the energy of the card or give deeper meaning to the healing which they are experiencing. The information and instruction given is insightful, direct, and compassionate, and the suggested actions allow for meaningful spiritual development.
For the Seeker who is searching to heal themselves, deepen their self-knowledge, and find their true self this deck will set you on the right path. If you are attracted to fantasy and Goth art and looking for an oracle deck that reflect those interests then the Heal Yourself Reading Cards are ideal for you. Overall, a beautiful deck with a noble purpose.
