Lenormand Cartomancy is a deck in the Lenormand tradition, but re-illustrated in vibrant, semi-abstract colour. Created by Christopher Butler, who also worked on the Quantum Tarot and Butler Tarot.
Chris Butler’s Lenormand Cartomancy deck is a delightful blend of traditional Lenormand structure with creative and updated visual and organizational twists.
The modern colorful, layered graphic style also includes insert illustrations from the Lenormand playing card era. Additionally, two cards are added for card numbers 28 & 29; they represent separately female and male switched from the standard location and allow for readings oriented to same-gender couples and relationships. I very much like the card size which is convenient for travel and quite easy to work with; the glossy cards measure 2 ˝ inches by 3 ˝ inches with rounded corners, and stack to just under 5/8 of an inch.
The beautiful aspect of this deck is the lovely balance of utility and artful gracefulness. Images are vibrantly rendered, on the reverse design and within each of the 38 cards. Numbering is clearly displayed in the two top corners within small circles, each card demonstrates sufficient graphic complexity to allow for additional intuitive wandering for applied meanings, and all completely dovetails with a bonafide book—no wee small thing here—that provides more than sufficient information for the neophyte as well as good material for experienced readers of Lenormand to explore.
The accompanying book, with colorful cover, measures 5 5/8 x 8 5/8 inches. The 96 page book devotes two pages to each card, including general significance, symbolism as a person, meanings for combination of that card with certain other cards, and how each card represents a predictive time frame. Each initial page for card interpretation displays a black and white, nearly same-size image of the card. The book also features background information, a half dozen sample spreads, and information on using the deck with explanations for yes/no queries and interpreting the playing card inserts. In summary, there is plenty to keep the inquirer busy and enjoying the wisdom of the cards.
All is enclosed in the 6” x 9” x 1 ˝” Schiffer box with magnetic closure and bright yellow ribbons connecting lid to box base.
