The Venetian Carnival Tarot is an elegant 78-card deck of intense masked figures, designed to stimulate the intuition and easy communication between the conscious and unconscious mind.
I've just unpacked my copy of the Venetian Carnival Tarot Kit by Roxana Paul. Inside the nice sturdy box I found a limited edition deck of 78 gilded edged cards and a 120-pages companion book.
Have you ever wished you could visit the famous Venetian Carnival, buy an exotic mask, hire a beautiful costume and feel the spirit of Venice's extravagance and adventure? And more, there is a high probability that the first Sola Busca Tarot (now in Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan) was created by an anonymous illuminator in Venice in 1491. Such a virtual journey becomes possible now due to Roxana Paul's new deck: Venetian Carnival Tarot. She created unique carnival costumes and masks, eccentric and inimitable in its beauty, as well as a historical Venice's background. I found in the cards a lot of skilfully tailored hats, wigs, jewellery, and accessories of that epoch. Molto impressionante! (as the Italians would say).
The Venetian Carnival Tarot deck is an astonishing blend of traditional Tarot symbolism with extraordinary and inspirational images. Its beautiful artwork in this modern Photoshop style. But why not? Nowadays virtual travelling has become an increasingly popular experience. We are happy with digital images, online albums and video clips, usually aimed at virtual friends on Facebook. Some sceptics may say that a heavily photoshopped reality is a rather poor substitution for the classical art. It depends on the creative and artistic content, and here in the Venetian Carnival Tarot cards, a newly created digital world of the Carnival can give us a fully involved impression.
The structure of the deck follows the Tarot de Marseilles tradition where Justice is No 8 and Strength is No 11 and the classical trumps: the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Justice, The Hermit, The Wheel of Fortune, Strength, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World. The suits are also traditional: Swords, Wands, Cups, and Pentacles, and. All Minors, including Aces, depicted with human images (of course, masked). So the Venetian Carnival Tarot deck looks good for a practical reading (as well as due to the good paper, symmetrical backside design and convenient size to shuffle).
A guidebook provided with the cards is quite informative (for the 120-pages book) with numerous pictures and charts. The author relies on psychological types and primary psychological functions that were developed by the psychologist Carl Jung. The card's explanations are based mainly on the key Jungian archetypes: persona, shadow, and self. The first archetype persona (or mask) is a focal point in the Venetian Carnival Tarot cards to discover real personalities, hiding behind social masks. I learned something from the book to develop my skills to finding out more accurate cards interpretations. If you want to have a better understanding of the Tarot system, this guidebook is a discovery indeed.
The meaning is king, so the author of the guidebook tried to show a reader three levels of card meanings. He supposed the first level based on the cosmic order. The second level is described via metaphoric and rather poetical text from ancient manuscripts. The third level is an explanation of cards symbolism and its personal interpretation. The author provides a reader with meanings of the cards both in the upright and reversed positions (it is important for reading). He applies the Jungian method as a key to a more systematic approach to a Tarot reading, creating an opportunity to discover the possible developments of life events. Understanding the approach allows seeing querent's points of view and attitudes, as well as distinct approaches to life and roles they play (real roles they hide behind social masks).
I love this deck and
recommend it both an experienced Tarot reader and a novice.
