Description

The beautiful Empress sits in field of grain that is ready to be harvested and gracefully protects her pregnant belly, which shows the cosmic spiral. A divine boy child clings to her in a loving embrace as if to remind her that he too needs her love, and the empress returns his embrace and affection and they come together in a golden aureole. Despite being both pregnant and with child, she still radiates a sensual female power and prowess.

Symbolism

The Empress is the eternal and divine mother. The cosmic spiral on her belly signifies that all life begins in her womb.

The divine child that she so lovingly embraces, the grain on which she sits and the flowers in her hair; all come from her love and cannot grow without her nurturing.

Card Meaning

The Empress signifies the female and chaotic power of the universe. She guards the powerful and vulnerable life force, which delicate balance should be protected but not constricted.

This sensual and loving archetype teaches us to love and cherish ourselves as well as the world around us. A mother’s true love means granting freedom for change and growth, protecting without smothering. As all mothers she juggles many tasks and she succeeds because she draws her energy from the love within her.

Artistic Media

The image was first sketched in ordinary pencil than colored with water-soluble colored pencils. When touched by water the pencil transforms into aquarelle paint and this makes the colors more vibrant. After the colors had dried the lines were accentuated with black ink.
