Myths and Mermaids Review by J.r. Rivera

These water creatures have come to splash you with euphoria, don’t fight it.

Myths & Mermaids Oracle of the Water deck features 44 rich and lavish illustrated cards. Each card features a mermaid, nymph, sprit, and many more water creatures. They come in different sizes and colors, and they come accompanied with other water creatures who rule their land. Each of these water creatures wants to reach out to you and tell you what you should know and guide you on how to listen to your feelings.

One of the cards that caught me by surprise and left me with my jaw opened was card 43. An Alien Mermaid. Here is an odd looking creature that is of a mermaid and extraterrestrial breed! Clearly, she has her mermaid tail and human figure, but if you look into her eyes, they are completely BLACK!!! Jasmine’s characters have cute bubbly round faces and heads, but this creature has an oval face. She indeed looks creepy! Nonetheless, her message is “Do not fear the foreign or alien.” The message is self-explanatory. It is saying that you should try new things, try things you’ve never known or thought of before. Learn from new experiences and from different people as well.

A card which I’m fond of and very familiar with is card 36. La Sirena (The Mermaid). This mermaid creature has her beautiful bronze skin tone, honey eye color, and black hair. The mermaid tail is red and tattooed with red and white flowers. Her hair is adorned with sea shells, pearl strings, sculls, and roses. She floats underneath the dark sea. I get the impression that La Sirena was based and inspired from the mermaid character from the Mexican Loteria (Lottery). I’m simply taken and honored by this card being features in this oracle deck. The message that La Sirena tells is “Do not get dizzy with the songs of the Mermaid.” This message tells not to drift off to wonderland or be taken by an illusion. Always plant your feet on the ground and remember where you came from.

The last card which I find beautiful and warm is card number 14. Venus with Cherubs. Here we have Venus, whose skin is pale and hair is silver, sitting on an open shell. To her left are three little children angels. The message that this card conveys is that “Love is true.” This is telling you that yes, love it true and only you can make it true and discover its fundamentals.

The back designs are not reversible and consist of one primary royal blue color. In the center of card is a mermaid who appears in card 16. Big Blue Whale which was zoomed in to accommodate the back design for these cards.

The size of the cards are approximately 5 ½ x 3 ¾ inches. They have an absolute matted and glossy feel, preventing the cards from sticking to one another and have a very gentle and soft feel. The cards are very sturdy enough to shuffle gently. They are flexible, and even if you have small hands, there will not be much of a problem shuffling them. The box where the cards are stored is a two piece box, bottom and lid, which is very sturdy and stores the card and booklet absolutely well.

Guess what? The companion booklet is NOT written by the talented Lucy Cavendish, instead by Jasmine Becket-Griffith’s sisters, Amber Logan and Kachina Mickeletto (people may wonder why Lucy Cavendish did not author this oracle deck, but if we look back, Lucy has already authored a previous Mermaid oracle). The companion booklet contains 117 pages. Amber and Kachina start off the book with an Introduction, How to use this deck, preparing the cards, preparing for readings, Shuffling the cards, reading for others, Reading types and card spreads, simple readings, complex readings, two card spreads titled the timeline and the wave, Memory and After a reading. And finally, the card meanings! Each page dedicated for the cards includes a small picture of the card, the title of the card, a small poem, brief description of the card, divination meaning, and antithesis meaning.

The artwork is done by none other than fame fantasy artist Jasmine Becket-Griffith. The medium for the art is acrylic painting which is painted on a white canvas. The art is very vivid and lucid with a touch of shadowy and noir elements.

I’m taken by this oracle deck and think that it is cute that Jasmine, along with her sisters, collaborated by creating this beautiful oracle deck. Lucy Cavendish fans may feel strange that Lucy did not work with Jasmine this time on this oracle deck. But let me tell you, what Amber and Kachina have written in this companion book is just amazing, simple, and down to earth! The meanings of the cards are so easy to understand. You can pretty much connect and reason with the card meanings and won’t have to read twice to understand them. Unlike Jasmine’s previous published oracle decks (Oracle of Shadows and Light, Oracle of the Shape-shifters, and Les Vampire Oracle), there are no keywords printed in the cards for this oracle deck. You will have to memorize the meanings. But after a few journaling sessions, the meaning of the cards will come to you easily. Also, there are a total of 14 cards that are horizontal (from left to right). If you’re looking for a unique deck that features water creatures, this one is for you.
