Review by Hal & Sidra Stone
We see Selves in a Box as an entirely new concept in cards. It's a simple, practical, and - at the same time - soul-infused approach to working with the many selves that make up the human psyche. The Selves in a Box card deck opens a doorway to the "Magic Theater" of these selves. As you go through that door and look around, you will see that you are more than you think are. You will see an abundance of possibilities as you are introduced to the many selves that can be available to each one of us in our lifetime.
As the creators of Voice Dialogue and pioneers in working with these selves, we are awed by Tamar Stone's exquisitely creative presentation of the selves: by the beauty and magic of the card deck, and by the remarkably insightful guide that accompanies it. And, as her father and stepmother, we joyfully applaud her accomplishment.
You don't need to know anything, or to believe in anything, in order to use this card deck! Material that, in the past, was only available to a select few is now available and accessible to everyone. It's inspiring and exciting to watch people as they use this card deck and expand their horizons. It invites them to appreciate their own lives - it honors who they are and what they have done - and, at the same time, it gives them a way of picturing what might happen if they dared to venture (safely) outside the box of their usual lives.
These cards can be used in many ways, by many different kinds of people, and for many purposes. There is a variety of draws and spreads carefully described in the Guide and we strongly suggest that you try some of them. These range from simple (the drawing of a single card) to complex spreads and each provides a fascinating set of insights.
We have seen these cards used by individuals, couples, or groups of friends for self-exploration and for sharing with each other in a meaningful way. We have seen them used successfully by teachers, therapists, coaches, and group leaders in their classes. They're a great way to begin a group or gathering. At the simplest, people choose a card and talk about how it might apply to their lives.
The card deck appeals to the senses; it is beautiful to look at and deliciously smooth and rich to touch. The subtlety of the colors and the quality of the images drew us deep into each card, encouraging the exploration of our inner worlds. And since many of the images are subtle and multi-dimensional, there is always more to discover - and more to elaborate upon.
The accompanying guide is a treasure to look at as well as to read. It is beautifully - and clearly - written. It teaches so very much in very few words. as people who have written many books on the selves, we are truly impressed by the way Tamar Stone has presented very complex thoughts simply and in ways that anyone can understand and benefit from.
We find this card deck positive and supportive in every way. The cards have the magic and the depth of Tarot but this is presented in a warm, straightforward, and personal way - as though you are blessed with the warm support of a kind - and very wise - friend.
The original - and as far as we know, unique - concept of the "personality motivation" and the "essence motivation" of each self is particularly exciting for both of us. It is a new way of looking at, and understanding, the selves. Each card - as each of our inner selves - has something to contribute to our lives and it is the positive aspect of this contribution that these cards emphasize.
These cards present the underlying motivation of each self. This motivation is both on the personality level (providing a unique contribution to the way in which we live our lives and interact with others) and on a soul or essence level (the deeper, soul-based motivation of this self in relation to our own unique life-path).
The Guide that accompanies the cards gives a clear and simple explanation of the challenges presented by either too much or too little of each self.
These cards speak directly to everyone. Whoever tries these cards - from people who use cards frequently to those who have never looked at a card deck - they all seem to find a meaningful personal message and an expansion of the way in which they view themselves and their lives.
There is nothing quite like these cards; they are truly a gift of selves!
