The Lunatic Tarot has 78 cards with expressive, artistic character illustrations in brownish hues. On the back is the corresponding card from the Rider-Waite and its title in English. The large size 'portfolio' edition - approximately five by ten inches - has cards bound together with thin, tearable plastic binding, but can be separated for use. Now also available in a regular card-sized edition with titles in English and Chinese.
Lunatic Tarot Review by MysticTree
This is not a deck for the faint of heart; it is challenging on many levels. It presents itself as an amazing art deck, but as you lay the cards out and look them over as a group you find the first of many surprises. The deck is a mixture of cards with innocent little girls, elegant men and sexually explicit images of both genders all shuffled together. What make some of these images ďadultĒ arenít what body parts they show as much as the positions these characters find themselves.
The next thing that jumps out is the differences in artistic styles Evan Yi Feng uses to bring these cards to life. Most of the images were created in muted earth tones with oils and pens. Other cards have hints of color used very spare. Peppered throughout both the Majors and the Minors are these amazingly dark people that appear to be gilded and more reminiscent of 15th century western art.
One way to see the diversity of this deck is to look to the Pages. The Page of Swords and of Wands give us cute young girls in short skirts, ribbons and bows. The Page of Pentacles is a woman clothed only by a long piece of cloth. Her head is down and she is reaching for the moon. The Page of Cups is the only man in the group. He wears a skin tight outfit and proudly displays his tongue piecing among others. It would be hard for him to be more different from the others.
Hidden among the cards is another anomaly in the Star card. On this card we find young girl naked of all but her star necklaces hands gracefully covering her chest and empty pitcher closing her below. What makes this card interesting is the artistís choice of negative space. We view our Star through a window of trees and leafs that where removed from the picture leaving only the white space to mark their place. Overall, the cards are a celebration of the love of goth and anima.
This is just a small look into the world of tarot as Evan Yi Feng presents it. They have to be seen and studied to understand how amazing they are. As to the cards themselves, another unique feature of these oversized cards (5 inches by 10 inches) is that each back feature a small (2 inches by 3.5 inches) image of the rider card instead of back art. While shuffling is possible when the cards are held sideways, the lack of a reversible pattern on the back may make traditional use hard for some readers.
